Mobley was inspired by a 1960s jazz album which featured Wayne Stettler’s Neil Bold, a heavy display face with odd counters and cuts. Expanding on Stettler’s ideas, Mobley constitutes a brand new typographic whole molded around the original.

Joachim Müller-Lancé of Typebox claims he was not under the influence of crop circles, Caspian folklore embroidery, or voodoo electronics when he created this font. He simply felt “a slight buzz and an urge to tinker with shapes”, hence the name “Tinka”.

The two work beautifully together, adding another family to the short list of sans/serif pairs we can highly recommend. If that’s not enough to convince you to try this family on your next project, take it from the esteemed judges of the Type Directors Club who awarded Relato Sans in last year’s TDC2 competition.

And remember the golden rule: two hyphens don’t make an em-dash.

No doubt you encountered signage on your journey to work and more than likely a billboard or some other form of advertising. Maybe you’ve been on the internet already today and possibly you’ve had chance to pick up a book. The point is that typography, some of it good, most of it bad, is all around us and although most people don’t consciously notice type (unless it’s really hard to read), they nonetheless respond to it. This makes it a powerful tool for communication and one that anyone who needs to say something in print could use more effectively.
